Montreal police have dismantled two high-tech fraud operations that were producing fake credit cards, passports and Canadian residency cards.
Police said Friday they've arrested three men and have seized an array of printers, hologram machines, computers and fake cards.
The first operation was discovered in the borough of Rosemont in early December, when a concerned citizen called police.
Police discovered equipment used to make fake credit cards. Kahled Bentoutaou, 33, was arrested Jan. 2 in connection with the operation.
The second operation, in St-Laurent, was busted Jan. 5. Police seized machines to make fake credit cards and official government documents.
They arrested Daniel Pierre, 40, and Marco Araujo, 29.
Pierre, Araujo and Bentoutaou have appeared in court and face various fraud and counterfeiting charges. If convicted, they could spend 10 years in prison.Police said the two fraud operations were not related.
Police haven't released many details about the fake cards, including who they were going to be sold or given to.
The equipment seized was high tech, police said.
"The embossing machine we seized in the second case is worth more than $30,000," said Christian Emond of Montreal police.
"Obviously with that kind of equipment, you're able to produce cards a lot quicker than you were with older equipment."

Sadly, this is just a drop in the large overall sea of global credit card fraud.
