I was just looking over RSS feeds and saw this entry on the SecurityFix blog.
So I ran over and gave the Secunia Software Inspector a try. It is pretty quick and didn't find much on my PC, but overall it is pretty nice. It runs via a Java applet in the browser.
Does it find all old software? Nope
But it does help those that aren't too geek to secure their browsing experience. Java, Flash, Windows Media Player, IE, Firefox, Winamp, Outlook Express, Windows Patch Level, etc.
It didn't seem to find my QuickTime Alternative or FoxIT PDF Reader, but hopefully it checks Quicktime and Adobe Reader as well. It isn't perfect, but what is perfect in today's world.
Any tool that helps reduce the drive-by-download threat is a good one in my book.
