Bluetooth, WiFi & FM On A Single Chip

Via extremetech.com -

Semiconductor maker Broadcom announced on Friday a new single-chip solution that combines Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and an FM receiver onto one silicon die.

The Broadcom BCM4325 Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM transceiver will be slated for use in mobile and handheld wireless devices, and will feature IEEE 802.11a/b/g, support for Bluetooth 2.0, and an advanced FM receiver, according to the company.

"We've been able to combine Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies using a 65 nm process which gives us a significant advantage in both footprint and power," said Michael Hurlson, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's WLAN business unit.

"As we are currently the number one Wi-Fi producer—and number two with Bluetooth—we think the combination of the two technologies for end applications like and games and other handheld devices is the next logical solution," Hurlson added.

Broadcom claims that by embedding the three technologies into one chip, the BCM4325 is also able to achieve up to 40 percent lower active and idle power consumption, while also freeing up as much as 50 percent in chip real estate. Additionally, Hurlson says Broadcom can now run both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies over a single antenna, providing further system cost and footprint savings.
