The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs has reported the loss of an external hard drive containing personal information of up to 48,000 veterans.
On Friday the Associated Press reported that a Veteran Affairs employee discovered the hard drive missing on January 22nd, believing it may have been stolen. Up to 20,000 of those records were not encrypted. A press release by the Department of Veteran Affairs indicates that an incident response team has been dispatched to investigate.
In 2006, the Department of Veteran Affairs admitted that a massive database containing personal information of up to 26.5 million veterans was stolen, prompting investigations by the FBI and the U.S. government.
