NORWICH — Defense attorneys filed a motion today requesting a new trial for Julie Amero, the former Norwich substitute teacher convicted of exposing her seventh-grade students to Internet porn.
Convicted on four counts of risk of injury to a minor, or impairing the morals of a child, Amero, 40, of Windham, faces up to 40 years in prison at sentencing Wednesday in New London Superior Court. Prosecutors said she accessed pornographic Web sites in 2004 and failed to protect her students at Kelly Middle School from seeing nude images on her classroom computer.
Amero’s attorney, William Dow III, based today’s motion for a new trial on “evidence discovered after the verdicts and now in possession of the state and the defense.” In light of the new evidence, Dow said the jury reached inaccurate conclusions about Amero’s alleged Web surfing.
Judge Hillary Strackbein is expected to rule on the motion prior to sentencing.
