Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday that the country reached one of the key goals of its nuclear programme and now has 3,000 centrifuges enriching uranium, the BBC reported
The figure is a symbolic threshold, because it allows enriching the quantity of uranium needed for a nuclear warhead in less than a year.
The West, and the US most vociferously, has long accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, an accusation Iran hotly denies.
The centrifuges are used to enrich uranium to make it usable in nuclear power plants, but also to the level necessary for nuclear weapons.
In addition to the existing 3,000 centrifuges, Iran is adding 164 centrifuges weekly, Ahmadinejad claimed.
The figure has not been confirmed by sources outside Iran.
