Thousands of people have gathered for a pro-democracy protest in Hong Kong after China denied the territory suffrage.
Protesters called on Sunday for the right to elect a government by 2012, despite China ruling last month that the city's citizens would not be allowed to vote for a leader until at least 2017 and the entire legislature by 2020.
Jackie Hung, the protest organiser's spokeswoman, said: "We will not give up. They should know they should not play with public opinion.
"We want to continue to fight for democracy in 2012. We want to tell Beijing that although they try to exert pressure on us, they can't take away our rights."
The semi-autonomous region currently has a chief executive, selected by about 800 mostly pro-Beijing officials.
