2007 Annual Study: U.S. Cost of a Data Breach

"Total costs increase: The total averages costs of a data breach grew to $197 per record compromised, an increase of 8 percent since 2006 and 43 percent compared to 2005. The average total cost per reporting company was more than $6.3 million per breach and ranged from $225,000 to almost $35 million

Financial services firms impacted most: The cost of a data breach for financial services organizations was $239 per compromised record, or more than 21 percent higher than the average, demonstrating that organizations with high expectations of trust and privacy have more to lose from a data breach."
