University Warns Students of Identity Theft Risk

Via WUSA9.com -

The University of Maryland is apologizing to its entire student body - for a mistake that could put students at risk of identity theft.

On July 1st, the school mailed all registered students a brochure that contained information about campus parking.

One week later, the university discovered that the mailing label for each student included that student's Social Security number.

The numbers were not identified as Social Security numbers. And they did not have the typical spacing between groups of numbers.

Nonetheless, the university is urging students to closely monitor their financial statements and place a free fraud alert on their consumer credit file.

Wasn't there a big push years ago to stop using SSN numbers for pretty much anything in academia?
