Turkish maritime officials say pirates have commandeered a Turkish chemical tanker off the coast of Yemen. It is the second ship to be commandeered in the area in the past two weeks. On Oct. 29, Somali pirates hijacked a ship carrying iron ore and demanded a ransom for its return.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said 21 more Filipino seafarers kidnapped in Somalia were released on Monday, leaving the total number of Filipino seamen still captives at 44. More than 200 Filipino seamen have been kidnapped since April 2008.

Somali pirates have released an Iranian-chartered ship seized in November and said on Saturday [Jan 11th] they were hopeful a Ukrainian ship loaded with tanks would be freed soon. Iran's biggest shipping firm said Delight, a cargo ship ferrying 36,000 tonnes of wheat to Iran from Germany, was released on Friday [Jan 9th], the same day a Saudi tanker was freed after a $3 million ransom was parachuted onto its deck.
