Syria: Al Assad Removes Military Intelligence Director

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has removed his brother-in-law Asef Shawkat, who is suspected of involvement in the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri, from his position as military intelligence director, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported July 3, citing Syrian Web site Shawkat has held the post of military intelligence director since Feb. 14, 2005, the day al-Hariri was killed. He has now been appointed deputy chief of staff for the army.
