Senior Saudi Cleric: Bin Laden Has No Authority To Issue Fatwas

Via thememriblog.org -

In response to televised remarks by the four captured terrorists who had planned to attack petroleum facilities in the Saudi city of Qiq that they had been waiting for a fatwa from Osama bin Laden to approve the operation, senior Saudi cleric Sheikh Abd Al-Muhsin Al-'Obikan, a moderate, said that bin Laden had no religious legal authority to issue fatwas.

Al-'Obikan said that bin Laden had attended a seminary that did not specialize in Islamic religious law sciences, and that he did not have enough knowledge to serve as a mufti in the Islamic world.

I tried to verify this article in Al-Watan, but I didn't find it. Even when I looked at yesterday's edition....but I did see an article about famous left-handed people.

For more information on Sheikh Al-'Obikan, check out this Asharq Alawsat interview from 2005.
