NY Police Arrest Alleged Diamond Gang

Via A Pakistan News -

NEW YORK: New York police announced the arrest of 12 men in plots to hijack Federal Express trucks, including one believed to be carrying millions of dollars in diamonds.

The armed gang allegedly seized a truck believed to contain the gems in December 2007 after posing as police officers, but abandoned the vehicle after failing to get into the cargo.

Police said they pounced on the alleged robbers as they gathered in Manhattan in preparation for a new FedEx truck heist.

“The city of New York announced the arrests of twelve persons for conspiracy to hijack Federal Express tractor-trailer trucks which they believed contained high-value items, including millions of dollars worth of diamonds,” the federal prosecutor’s office said.

The gang included three gunmen from Puerto Rico and had been scouting out a location on Long Island to offload their haul from the second truck, the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Each of the men face lengthy jail terms if convicted on robbery and weapons charges.
