Russian FSB Thwart Possible Assassination Attempt

MOSCOW, May 19 (Itar-Tass) - The Federal Security Service (FSB) has officially confirmed that two residents of the Leningrad Region who are suspected of planning to assassinate Valentina Matviyenko are detained.

The Federal Security Service together with the Russian Interior Ministry prevented an attempt on the St. Petersburg governor's life, the FSB public relations centre said in its official statement on Saturday.

As a result of operational search actions, two Russian citizens, residents of the Leningrad Region, were detained red-handed on May 16, 2007 on suspicion of preparing the crime, the statement said.

During the search, two F-1 grenades and more than 500 grammes of "plastit" explosives were seized from them. Their names are not given so far for investigation reasons.

An official investigation has been launched into the case. The detained persons face charges of "preparation for an attempt on a state or public figure's life" and "illegal possession of arms, ammunition and explosives," under Russian Criminal Code Articles 30, 277 and 222, the statement said.
